Counterpoint: in favor of mandatory influenza vaccine for all health care workers.

چکیده
Health care workers (HCWs) who have contact with patients have an increased risk of exposure to vaccinepreventable diseases and of spreading those diseases to vulnerable patients. Maintenance of immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases is an essential part of disease-prevention and infection-control programs [1]. Influenza is the most common vaccine-preventable disease, and nosocomial transmission is frequently identified in health care facilities; yet, voluntary vaccination policies permit HCWs to put patients at risk of influenza, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine. Together, influenza and pneumonia are the seventh leading cause of death overall in the United States. Deaths due to influenza and pneumonia greatly exceed the death toll from AIDS, and these illnesses rank in the top 10 causes of death for every decade of life. Annual epidemics of influenza result in ∼40,000 deaths and 1200,000 hospitalizations in the United States [2, 3], accounting for the winter increase in US mortality rates [4]. The greatest toll is on persons 65 years of age and those with underlying chronic illnesses—precisely the population in our hospitals, intermediate care facilities, and long-term care facilities. Vaccination is the primary means of preventing influenza. Inactivated influenza vaccine is safe and effec-

Safety of a Trivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine in Health Care Workers in Kurdistan Province, Western Iran; A Longitudinal Follow-up Study
We studied the safety of a trivalent inactivated surface antigen (split virion, inactivated) influenza vaccine, Begrivac® (Novartis Company), widely used in health care workers in Kurdistan. A longitudinal follow-up study was performed in Sanandaj city, west of Iran, recruiting 936 people. A questionnaire was completed for each participant, and all symptoms or abnormal physical findings were re...

Annual influenza vaccination for health care workers has the potential to benefit health care professionals, their patients, and their families by reducing the transmission of influenza in the health care setting. Furthermore, staff vaccination programs are cost-effective for health care institutions because of reduced staff illness and absenteeism. Despite international recommendations and str...
متن کاملMaking influenza vaccination mandatory for health care workers: the views of NSW Health administrators and clinical leaders.
The challenges of maintaining high influenza vaccination rates in health care workers have focused worldwide attention on mandatory measures. In 2007, NSW Health issued a policy directive requiring health care workers to be screened/vaccinated for certain infectious diseases. Annual influenza vaccine continued to be recommended but not required. This paper describes the views of NSW Health admi...
متن کاملImmunizing health care workers against influenza: a glimpse into the challenges with voluntary programs and considerations for mandatory policies.
BACKGROUND Vaccination of health care workers (HCWs) is an important patient safety initiative. It prevents influenza infection among patients and reduces staff illness and absenteeism. Despite these benefits, HCW influenza immunization uptake is low. Therefore, strategies to achieve high immunization coverage in HCWs, barriers to uptake, and perceptions of mandatory influenza immunization poli...

Introduction: Influenza viruses are the major respiratory pathogens worldwide and high-risk groups such as healthcare workers may develop severe forms of the disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of influenza vaccination for 4 target groups including pregnant women, elderly people (aged over 65 years), healthcare workers and school-age children in Iran.
